Los síntomas de la meningitis varían según la edad del niño y la causa de la infección. Debido a que en ambos tipos de meningitis los síntomas pueden ser similares a los de al gripe, en especial en la primera etapa de la enfermedad, y a que la meningitis bacteriana suele ser muy grave, es importante diagnosticar la infección sin pérdida de tiempo.
La meningitis viral y la meningitis bacteriana pueden causar síntomas similares. Aunque puede ser difícil identificar el tipo de meningitis, un doctor puede hacerlo mediante pruebas médicas.
Algunos de los síntomas de la meningitis bacteriana y viral son:
- Fiebre
- Cuello rígido
- Dolor de cabeza severo
- Sensibilidad a la luz
- Vómitos
- Nausea

La meningitis viral suele generar síntomas similares a los de la gripe, como fiebre y secreción nasal, y pueden ser tan leves que la enfermedad no llega a diagnosticarse. La mayoría de los casos de meningitis viral remiten por completo después de 7 a 10 días, sin complicaciones ni necesidad de tratamiento.
